Lobby Day and Social Work Month Celebrations!

LOBBY DAY 2017!

Thank you to everyone that attended Social Work Lobby Day on March 7th, 2017!
We hope you all had an opportunity to connect, to communicate, and to foster an environment of collaboration with your fellow social workers.
We had an opportunity to hear excellent advocacy tips from Dr. Sheila Schuster (for those not present, or those that couldn’t make it into the room, the presentation is available as a video on our Facebook page), Michael Gray offered advocacy tips to students in the rotunda, and numerous groups had meetings with their legislators before the rally itself.
We were delighted to see so many students at Lobby Day, and we hope that these students were inspired to be the driving force behind the next wave of our profession here in Kentucky. We were also delighted to welcome the Kentucky Society for Clinical Social Work (KSCSW) to join us and extend an invitation to membership in their organization.
Huge thanks is also due to our invited speakers, our amazing interns who have been tremendous so far in 2017, and to the Capitol staff that worked with us securing the rooms we used when our room assignments were changed at the last minute!

We also wanted to share how impressed we were with the student art work that lined the corridor hall last week.  Statements and pictures from our future social workers across Kentucky spoke a powerful message that was not ignored by staff or visitors to our Capitol.

It took three hours to take down the art work because people would stop to share their stories about a positive experience with a social worker in their lives, stories of how critically important our roles are in helping vulnerable Kentuckians….we were hugged, and a few even shared tears with us and quite honestly, prompted some tears too…..we were told that more pictures were taken of our art work over the four days it was displayed than some staff members had ever seen before…and that when pictures would fall on the floor, people would stop and respectfully hang them back up or place carefully on the ledge of the opposite wall.

Our voices and our social work spirit was felt throughout the Capitol and we are inspired to keep the momentum going!  We will be carefully organizing our 2017 art and sharing it on our Facebook page and website for all to enjoy.  Again, our most heartfelt gratitude to all of our artists!  And remember, it is never to early to prepare for Lobby Day 2018!
